The Online Jewelry Academy (OJA) was established in 2012 by co-founders John Ahr and Don Hunt. Working with just a cell phone camera, the two produced their first videos for UA-cam. The response to their initial videos was encouraging. So, Ahr and Hunt decided to continue to produce educational videos for anyone interested in making jewelry. As their access to video recording and editing technology increased, so did the number and quality of their videos. But, the two men have remained consistent in adhering to three principles in each of their videos:
Safety First
Step-by-step instruction that's easy to follow
Concise and interesting lessons
You can find the complete Online Jewelry Academy (OJA) playlist here on UA-cam or on the OJA's website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy.com

Hello sir, what kind of wax would you recommend to make an ear cuff? Thank you
If you want to carve detail on the surface you’ll need to use a blue carving wax. But if you just want a simple ear cuff, you could use a wax wire. 😀
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy wow, thank you so much for the information and for the fast reply. I am learning so much from you!
thanks I really needed this!! 😍
I’m so glad you found what you needed. Thanks for watching! 😃
Very helpful.

I used Google translate.
Oh, MYYY! 🤭
If you check out the manufacture's website, you'll see that I used their script. Hope you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching!😀
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy As they say in France: "C'est le ton qui fait la musique." 😉 You presented said script in a very entertaining fashion, and I had fun watching the video. Thanks for the good advice!
Where has your Patreon gone? I tried to support you but page no longer there.
Thank you for your support. We closed our Patreon account some time ago because we were no longer producing new content. If you want to help support the OJA, simply watch (or let play) the commercials attached to our videos. Thanks! 😀
Absolutely brilliant! Many thanks.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching! 😀
Great video thank you
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching! 😀
I went to the diamond stores you mentioned the prices seem affordable!
Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching! 😀
I was doing this half a dozen times, and every time it went more coppery. Then I was weighting the piece in my hand and and thinking, why is it so light and does not feel as cold to hand.🤦♂
It sounds like your results were bad because you didn’t use clean pickle. Make a fresh batch of sodium bisulfate pickle solution and try again. 😀
Is this process similar to how factories achieve frosty white silver chains? I recently cloth polished a new chain in hopes to enhance the reflective look on the diamond cuts, but the white frosted finish changed to a mirror-like silver finish. Could this heating / pickling method bring back the white look?
This process will give silver a white surface. But it only lasts a short time. Polishing and even normal wear will change it to a silver color. 😀
are you using dead-soft or half-hard wire?
Annealing the wire makes it dead soft. Half hard wire is generally used directly from a supplier to create wire wrapped pieces. 😀
that was an AWESOME tutorial - thanks !
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! 😀
Thank you ❤
Glad you found the video helpful. Thanks for watching!😀
No lubricant? No vice? Are those carbide steel? I have had zero luck with drilling so far.
You can use bees wax or any type of lubricant that you use on your saw blades to lubricate your drill bits. If you use the technique demonstrated in this video, of drilling a "pilot hole" first, you may not need to secure the objet that you're drilling in a vice. The drill bits used in the video are high speed bits from a jewelry supply company. You'll get better at drilling with practice. Good luck! 🍀 😀
I bought a 2 piece set of something like this in the early 70's. They were meant to be worn on either side of a narrow cuff. The shop called them "guard" bracelets for an inlayed turquoise bracelet I bought there as well. Ever since I started jewelry making I've wondered how to do this, and today you've given me the inspiration to do many things by giving me the key to this process!! Thank you for the gracious sharing of your knowledge with the world! ❤❤🤍🤍💙💙
I’m so happy to learn that the video inspired you. Thanks for watching! 😀
Thanks, I have done broom casting, but I think this is easier.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! 😀
Thank you so much. I've tried gluing metal to metal and metal to resin... After it dries it breaks if you drop it..... I've used gorilla super glue, loctite super glue and professional glue, and super glue for metal... I also tried the resin epoxy that didn't work either... I bought E7000... and Jewelry glue... Nothing worked...
I hope that the information in the video helps you to complete your projects. Thanks for watching! 😀
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Yes, thank you so much... I just ordered the Cement Glue again... I purchased some in 2022, but have no clue where to find it... 🤣
You can get it from most jewelry supply companies. I’m sure that if you look up the product online you’ll find plenty of resources. 😀
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Yes, I found it on Amazon... Thank you 🙏
Steel pliers without any anti-scratch surface treatment 😳 Gosh have mercy... 😵💫
What would you suggest? Please share in the comments. 😀
I have a piece with gold and pearl. Will it damage either? Is there a way to protect the pearl? If put tape over the pearl, will it protect it?
The gold on your piece will not be affected by this process. To protect your pearl coat it with petroleum jelly. You can wash it off when your finished. 😀
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Thank you so much!
Nice video. Does the solder flow on to the entire chain?
No, only in the seams. 😀
Learning about burnishing for a piece I'm making for an anniversary and this is the gem I find. This is how i want to learn everything now.
Wow! Thank you for the positive feedback. Good luck with your project. 🍀 😀

Hello John, Can you tell me how Caustic vinegar and salt pickle is? I have stage 4 COPD and was told I have lung cancer on Monday. I felt some lung issues while using it today. Did I get it too hot? Also I'm trying to cap a bear claw and having a hard time with the cap. The solder wont flow to the joint (1 inch long) and the piece melts. Am I heating too fast? Would it help to solder the inside so I can get the heat under the piece? Thanks for your videos. Great help for sure.
You essentially answered your own questions. If the pickle is irritating your lungs, don’t heat it and only use it in a well ventilated area. If your piece is melting while you’re soldering, you’re probably using too much heat. Clean the piece thoroughly and try again with less heat. Soldering can be very tricky as you know. Not oxidizing the solder in heat is a good idea. Sorry to hear that you’re dealing with a major health issue.
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Thank you kind Sir. It's so nice of you to reply so quickly. Another question please. Is holding the piece with Alligator clips causing a hot spot? The piece melted where it was held by the clip. Dumb question probably John. Sorry. I just seem to be having some trouble with this cone. Is a 1 inch joint too long? Also did you say your birds nest is made of Bailing wire? Thank you so much and many blessings.
@@kevinkline6835 Yes, the birds nest is made from baling wire. Without seeing the setup, I’m not sure where the problem lies. Steel holding devices generally draw heat away from the object. Be sure to keep your flame moving. 😉
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy That's what I thought about the clip Sir. I think I had this same failure way back when. LOL Thank you once again.
Finally found a video showing the Bezel being soldered before soldering it to the back plate. Thank you. And very easy instruction.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! 😀
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy You're a excellent teacher. Also reading the comments you answer so many of my same questions. Worked jewelry metal for a few yrs about 25 yrs ago and needed refreshed. Thank you.
2 questions, I am a glass painter I have high-fire enamels for glass (Reusche), do they work for this type of copper enameling? I'm unable to find Penny Bright, what is the next alternative, and could it be Wright's Copper, Brass Cream?
I’ve never used Reusche enamels. My guess is that they are not formulated to bond with metal. But I could be wrong. You could contact the manufacturer for advice. Or, you could do some experimenting. Penny Bright is slightly abrasive unlike Wright’s Copper, Brass Cream. So you might look for a more aggressive cleaner. 😀
Can you put more than one piece of jewelry in tumbler at a time? Also what determines the amount of time one should choose- the longer the shinier?
Yes, you can put multiple pieces in the Tumblr at one time. Two hours is about the longest you want to leave a piece in the tumbler. It takes two hours on average to produce a good result. 😀
came to learn how to do it, stayed cuz it is cool and presented in a very intresting way
Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching! 😀

You can fuse sterling scrap pieces without “frosting” them to raise the fine silver first. 😀
